This exciting recipe is from our friend Emily @whatiateforbreakfast – thank you so much Emily. AIR FRYER POP TARTS 🍓. I’m throwing it back to the 90s with today’s breakfast, my inner child is so happy right now 🤩😄. If, like me, you grew up in the 90s (1990 baby here 🙌) chances are you’ll have had these sugary pastries for breakfast at some point. My parents only let me have them on *very* rare occasions so they always felt like such a treat 🤤.
Here’s how you can make your own version at home using ready-rolled shortcrust pastry and a jar of Stokes EXTRA Strawberry Jam.
Method
I cooked the pop tarts in my air fryer but they can be oven baked too – instructions for both are below 👇.
Recipe (makes 6):
🍓 Unroll a sheet of shortcrust pastry & cut vertically into 6 strips.
🍓 Spread 1/2 tbsp jam (or another spread of your choice/mashed fruit) in the top half of each strip, leaving a border around the edges.
🍓 Brush the border with egg wash, then fold over the remaining half so the filling is covered. Press firmly around the edges to ensure the filling doesn’t leak out during cooking.
🍓 Use a fork to crimp the edges, then brush the tops with egg wash. Prick a few holes in the top of each to allow steam to escape during cooking.
🍓 Place in your air fryer basket (I lined the base with baking paper), then air fry at 170C for 14-16 mins. If you have a bake setting on your air fryer use this, otherwise the regular air fryer setting is fine.
🍓 Alternatively you can oven bake on a lined baking tray at 180C fan/200C for 20 mins.
🍓 Transfer the pop tarts to cool on a wire rack, then once cooled enough to handle, mix 1 tbsp icing sugar with a few drops of cold water until it is runny enough to spoon over.
🍓 Glaze with the icing, then scatter over hundreds & thousands.
🍓 Enjoy! They will keep in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
